New Horizons in Fertility Research: Why Do Some Eggs Not Work?
Using glass, poetry and conversation to explore egg quality and IVF research
Project Overview:
This public engagement project invited IVF patients and the wider public to explore why some eggs fail to develop, and what scientists are doing to understand this. Using fused glass artworks as a tactile starting point, researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh and Warwick created a series of exhibitions, events and conversations about fertility, embryo donation and research.
Led by Professor Adele Marston, the project collaborated with artist David Mola, poet Robyn Kirk and partner organisation Progress Educational Trust (PET) to shape a national conversation around fertility science. Two sets of artwork now remain on permanent display at both universities, and an online exhibition is available.

Project Outputs
Exhibitions
-
Two collections of artworks created with and by scientists, exploring molecular egg sorting and IVF treatment. Now on display in Edinburgh and Warwick. Online meetings featuring artworks, interpretive content, and recordings of public events.
Poetry
-
Poet Robyn Kirk created three original poems from patient interviews and reflections. One poem, Hope, became a powerful emotional centrepiece.
